On June 20, 2004, Calvin and Wendi were placed into their Recovery Room.
Wendi had not had any time to comb her hair or eat. Calvin wanted all
of her attention. She kept on trying hard to breast feed poor Calvin
who kept on crying. At times, she wanted to just give up. But
with the help of her husband, David, she became successful. However,
once Calvin was declared Jaundice (On June 22, 2004), she was forced to stop
feeding him her milk. She began him on Formula.
It pained her to feed him formula when she knew that her milk was the best
thing for him. She began to pump and store her milk for her baby.
Because of this, she was able to save her milk for him and give him all of
the vitamins he needed when he was released from the hospital on June 24,
2004. She had a lot of support from everyone she knew so that she was
able to breast feed through out his first few months. As of the
present date, he is still being fed her milk. She hopes to give him as
much of her milk as she can to ensure proper growth.
As with most breast feeding mothers, it does feel as if all she
ever does is breast feed. She constantly is checking her breasts to
ensure that they are filling up fast enough to keep up with her growing boy.
It is normal to be breastfeeding 24/7. Wendi however found the way to
make her child sleep throughout the night.
She listened to the doctor's advice. Some times at night time, you
need to let the child cry out his frustrations. She feeds him every
three hours and Just before bed. She also changes his diaper and
kisses him good night. Then he will see that she is gone and start to
cry. This crying will last about 15 minutes. Soon, he will be
asleep.
FACT: When your child gets his/her shots, you will need to comfort
him/her much more then normal. Remember when you got your shots?
They stung your whole arm right? It's no different for your baby
except, your baby is so much smaller then you were when you remember your
shots. So therefore, the stinging is much more stronger and lasts much
longer. Just hug your baby and sing to your baby. Let your
chores wait. Your baby is much more important. They will calm
down soon and maybe even smile at you. They know that you are there
for them.
Wendi is still learning as time goes on, but she will keep you
informed on what all else you may need to know.
Never shake your baby!
If your baby won't stop crying, just put them in their
crib/ cradle and walk away for a little while. Close the doors and
calm down. It is important for you to be calm or your baby will never
calm down. When you have relaxed, go back to them.
